Designated seat of Rusk County in 1843. Enjoyed rapid growth during its first two decades, but disastrous fire in 1860 destroyed most commercial buildings. Oil discovered in 1930. City is now oil and agriculture commercial center; home of Texas Baptist Institute.
City is a Main Street City with walking tours of the historic downtown district available. Annual events include the Wildflower Driving Trails held Apr. 15–May 31 and the Annual Heritage Syrup Festival in Nov.
