Mission Señora De Los Dolores De Los Ais

 

City: San Augustine | Region: Piney Woods

Established in 1717 but abandoned due to French invasion in 1719. It was restored in 1721 near the village of Ais Indians. Closed in 1773 when Spanish evacuated all East Texas missions. Until recently, only historical markers identified the site. Today, a city park — complete with RV campsites, tent camping, group shelters and walking trails — marks the location of the historic mission. V isit the Mission Dolores Visitor Center, which houses an interactive and interpretive display relating to the original mission, as well as the El Camino Real de los Tejas visitor center.
