Odessa Meteor Crater and Museum, The

City: Odessa | Region: Big Bend Country

The Odessa Crater was formed in prehistoric times when a shower of nickel-iron meteorites collided with the earth. The crater, the second largest in the nation, is approximately 550 feet in diameter and was originally more than 100 feet deep. The site was not identified as a meteor crater until the 1920s. An adjacent museum and visitors center has exhibits on meteorites, tektites, meteorite impact products, as well as historical videos and related items of interest with an emphasis on material from outer space. Open Tues.–Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun. 1–5 p.m. Daily self-guided crater tours 9 a.m.–6 p.m. I-20 exit 108 west of Odessa.
