Childress

Region: Panhandle Plains

Known as Gateway to the Panhandle (located in the southern edge of the Texas Panhandle) and Crossroads of Hospitality (crossroads of U.S. 287 and U.S. 83). On Highway 287, between Wichita Falls and Amarillo, the city has become known as a hunters' haven. Many hunters return each year to hunt deer, quail, dove and wild hogs. Baylor and Childress lakes are located nine miles northwest of Childress and are popular for bass fishing.

Fair Park has a historical marker for the Goodnight Trail, an extension of the famed Goodnight-Loving Trail over which herds of cattle trekked to market.

A 20th-century Veterans Memorial on the courthouse lawn lists Childress County veterans who served during that period. The city still has many of the brick streets that were put into place in the 1920s.
